ALS Kids Hold Par 2 Fundraiser to benefit The ALS Association Western Pennsylvania Chapter

Our Mini-Golf Fundraiser was highlighted by Blacktie-Pittsburgh.com

"On August 20, children and their parents with a passion for philanthropy enjoyed a light-hearted miniature golf competition at Par 2 Golf Course in Monroeville to benefit The ALS Association Western PA Chapter.  The event, which ran from 10 am to 1 pm featured plenty of fun for all ages.  Par 2 Golf Course has long been a summer hot spot for Pittsburghers offering three eighteen hole courses, food and an arcade room.   On Saturday, Aug. 20th however, guests were “Putting” their energy into more than just trying to get a “hole in one”.  Participants were hitting the greens to raise money to help find a cure for ALS and help pay for ALS patient care.  The event was hosted by ALS Kids – a company formed by two young ladies striving to make a big impact in the ALS community.

ALS Kids Founders, Maeve Shaughnessy, 11 and Sydney Birchard, 10, have an important reason to “tee” up to support the disease.  They both have family members who have been diagnosed with ALS.  Sydney’s grandfather passed away from ALS prior to her birth and Maeve’s grandmother, Carol, was diagnosed with ALS on December 1, 2014 and has been living with ALS for the past twenty months.

Both Maeve and Sydney are convinced that ALS Kids can make a difference; in helping to raise funds to help boost ALS research while also helping to support the local ALS Chapter that provides care to patients like Maeve’s grandma, Carol.

“I am incredibly impressed by Maeve and Sydney!”  Says Merritt Spier, Executive Director of the ALS Association Western PA Chapter.  “At their age I know I wasn’t thinking about raising thousands of dollars to help cure a disease but they have far exceeded our expectations and they are mature beyond their years.  Their passion and dedication to the cause motivates everyone they come in contact with and I doubt that there is a single person out there who could say ‘no’ to either of these adorable girls when they knock on the door for help.” Said Spier.

Attendees of the miniature golf fundraising event enjoyed some putt-putt, a photo booth, a fifty-fifty raffle and a Chinese auction featuring child centered baskets with themes such as: the movies, a child’s paint party, sporting events and more.  The first three golfers to score a hole in one also had the opportunity at a chance to win a twenty-five dollar ITunes gift card.

“Par 2 has a long time slogan that says, ‘Join us for a great time at a great place,’” said Par2 Owner, Terry Grady.  “We hope that everyone who participated in the ALS Kids Fundraiser enjoyed themselves.  The event supports a great mission and some great work in our community.”

“Thank you so much to everyone who attended the golf event,” said Maeve. “Laughs were heard, prizes were won, and most importantly money was raised!”  Please consider supporting our walk team, Carols Crew, at the 2016 Walk to Defeat ALS on August 27th at Point State Park.  Join ALS Kids for some breakfast, pictures and a walk around the point.  Every step adds up and every cent adds up in the fight against ALS!”"
